Top 4 Weird Food Inventions

Pancake

Delicious and innovative! Check out our favourite food inventions.

Sprayable pancake batter

Saves you the hassle of making batter, as well as the washing up involved. Sprayable pancake batter does what it says on the tin – it sprays the batter directly into the frying pan, so you don’t need to whisk and pour.

Edible bowls

You’re eating a lovely bowl of soup, but it’s just not substantial enough to fill you up. So how about eating the bowl it came in?

The imaginatively-titled ‘Butt Foods’ came up with this idea last year, and it is proving pretty popular. Soups, stews, and even curries can be served in their delicious bowls. Made out of dough and baked in the oven, they are tasty as well as functional.

Tearless onions

Not so much an invention as a scientific discovery. A team of gene researchers managed to locate the enzyme present in onions that makes hardened chefs cry.

The team, from the New Zealand Centre for Crop and Food Research, used this knowledge to breed a strain of onions that didn’t have the ‘crying’ enzyme. Dr Eady, who led the team, said "We anticipate that the health and flavour profiles will actually be enhanced by what we've done."

Poo coffee

As with most things that sound disgusting, poo coffee is actually considered a delicacy, and sells for around £50 per cup.

Coffee Raro is made from Kopi Luwak beans. However, it’s the production of the coffee that makes it really unique. The beans are fed to a breed of Asian cat, and collected once they have passed through the cat’s digestive system. Bottoms up!
