14-year-old wins fight with shark

Sandbar Shark swimming in a tank

A shark bit off more than it could chew when it attacked 14-year-old Lydia Ward.

She was bitten on the hip by the 1.5 metre long shark while swimming at a New Zealand beach.

She hit it around the head with her boogie board until it let go and swam away.

“I saw my brother's face and turned to the side and saw this large grey thing in the water so I just hit it on the head with a boogie board,” Lydia said.

Her mother said it was amazing how calm she was. “I couldn't believe the lack of fuss,” she said.

“I would've been hysterically screaming but no, there was no screaming. She was just standing there looking a bit shaky.”

Sharks attack less than 100 people a year, and only about a tenth of attacks are fatal.

By contrast, 133,000 people are injured every year by doors!

Good story..... but the shark is smaller in length then I am tall so it's not as bad as getting attacked by a Bull or Great White shark

Woh, I would have just stood there frozen. But It couldn't have been that big.

She hit the shark with a boogie board- seriously, it can't have been that big!
