As a student, there will be times when there is no other alternative but to eat out. This does not necessarily mean you have to have a three-course meal with all the trimmings.

The average cost of a dining out is about £15-£20 for a main meal and non alcoholic drinks.
When budgeting, remember to think about the cost of your drinks too. Soft drinks cost about £2 each, wine about £4.00 per glass or £13 per bottle and beer around £3.
There are a number of ways you can eat out well without blowing your budget.

Cheaper food outlets

Cafés, canteens and bars, which are run by the university or student union, may be subsidised and so cheaper than chains.

Meal deals

Look out for restaurants offering meal deals. Some chain restaurants offer deals where you could pay £10 or less for a main meal and non alcoholic drinks.

NUS is your best friend

Look out for restaurants and outlets offering discounts to NUS card holders. It is always worth asking at a restaurant or café if they offer a student discount.

Do you really need to tip?

If you are eating in a restaurant it is usual to tip 10% if you've had good service. But check that service isn't already included in your bill. In pubs, people don't usually tip.
