Welcome to LanguageZone 2012

languagezone students

LanguageZone has relaunched for 2012, with lots of new resources and activities for modern languages students. You can check them out by visiting LanguageZone, or find out more below.

So, you’re studying a language? That’s great news! Being able to speak another language opens the door to new cultures, travel opportunities, and a wide range of employment options in a variety of sectors, both at home and abroad!

So, you’re studying a language at GCSE or A-level? Fantastic news! In addition to learning a new language, you’ll be developing your communication skills and acquiring many other generic skills that can be applied to your other studies too!

So, you’re studying a language at GCSE or A-level and sometimes need a bit of help? You’ve come to the right place!

LanguageZone is a newsletter for students, just like you, written by students who are studying languages at university. They’ve been in your shoes and understand both the challenges and the rewards of learning a language- a well respected skill!

Each edition of LanguageZone will feature two general interest articles based on topics such as film, music, sport or TV, and one article based on a theme studied at GCSE level.

To help you along the way, each article contains a vocabulary section, so you don’t have to keep reaching for the dictionary. By improving your vocabulary, you’ll be expanding your knowledge and developing your language skills in no time!

Having read the text, you can use the questions at the end of each article to test your comprehension. Finally, try listening to the MP3 recordings to improve your listening skills and to hear how native speakers pronounce the words in the text.

You could even try to write your own article in the target language, based on one of the themes. You can download a PDF of each article to assist you as a guide.

We hope that LanguageZone is a useful tool that helps you with your studies. For more information, please contact wideningaccess@cardiff.ac.uk

Good luck!
