What is vernacular architecture?

IglooArchitecture isn’t only done by professional architects. Find out how buildings created by ordinary people have influenced the world of architecture.

While most modern buildings are the result of plans and drawings, many building methods have evolved because of the needs of people in particular places and the natural materials available there. This is called "vernacular architecture".

However, vernacular architecture is not about the kind of building, but how it is created: if an architect designed a building in one of these styles, it would not be an example of vernacular architecture, but "traditional architecture".

Nonetheless, vernacular architecture isn’t just an interesting bit of history for modern architects. Looking at the way people traditionally build in a certain place can be very useful when designing a building. As well as showing what materials are available locally and how well they stand up to the climate, it can reveal how people live – for example, how big houses are built, and how many rooms there are.

But you never know i might someday learn how to make one too!
