Where you live during your studies can have an impact on what you get out of university.
To get the most out of the experience, think carefully about what you want out of your new home when looking for accommodation and follow these simple tried and tested tips:
- Location, location- consider how the cost of commute to university will affect your budget.
- You can get a bigger maintenance loan if you study in London.
- In halls and most privately rented accommodation, full-time students don't have to pay council tax. To find out how to apply for exemption, contact the Students Union.
- In halls, many of your bills will be covered.
- Avoid the 'flatmate from hell'. If you can, make sure you know the people you are living with. If there are problems always try to discuss them.
- Insurance- make sure you’re covered. It is a fact that thieves target students. Just think how much it would cost you to replace all your CDs, clothes and possessions. Insurance is worth it to cover this. Check with your folks or halls of residence to see whether their insurance will cover you whilst you're away at uni.
